Black holes are real objects that God made in space. Because they have so much mass, their gravity is so strong that light can’t even escape from them. If light cannot escape a black hole, then it can never get to your eyes, so it appears black. When you close your eyes in a dark room, you can’t see anything, and it appears black because light doesn’t make it to your eye.
A black hole’s gravity is so strong that it pulls light back into it. Imagine throwing a ball up into the sky—it would fall back down again, right?
In a black hole, it is actually doing more than just pulling light in. It is actually pulling space itself in faster than the speed of light. So light that is trying to travel away from a black hole moving at the speed of light gets sucked into it.
In a black hole, there is a certain distance away from it where the trend reverses and light is faster and can escape. That distance is called the “event horizon.” But a black hole actually distorts the space around itself. Researchers recently found what they think is the largest black hole ever discovered. It’s at the core of the galaxy called “NGC 1277.”
