I love God, so why am I so unhappy?

You’re thankful that Jesus paid the penalty for your sins on the cross. You’re happy that you will spend eternity in heaven. But you can’t seem to find any joy here on earth. It doesn’t make any sense. Christians are supposed to be happy.

We live in a sinful world, a broken world, a world where a perfect relationship with God is in the future and in a different place called heaven.

Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.

2 Corinthians 5:1-4

Some are living the Christian life right, but are sad because of a personality type and that’s OK. Some are unhappy because of certain choices. There are Christians who think they can do life alone. We need each other. We need to encourage and be encouraged, we need to serve and be served. We need to connect with one another. We are happier together than when we are apart.

Are you reading and meditating on the Word of God? Look up Bible verses with the words joy or rejoice in them. How’s your prayer life? Ask God to bring joy into your life; not to the point of laughing all the time or walking around with a grin on your face but a heart of peace and a mindset of ‘God is good’. Have you thought about the character of God? God is love, merciful, powerful…(keep going). Are you listening to Christian music? Are your thoughts negative or positive? Your emotions, most of the time, will follow your thinking.

Do not give up hope, do not dwell on your own unhappiness. Find someone who needs your help or needs a friend and be that friend. Not always, but often sad people are self- centered, they think about their own situation too much. How can you serve at a Bible believing church? Join the choir, teach a 3rd grade Sunday School class, be part of a Bible study. Spend time with other Christians, share in their joys and encourage them when their lives are difficult. It is important to know God in a personal way through His Son Jesus Christ. Don’t be afraid to ask your pastor for help, that is one of the reasons he is there.
